Euboea is the name they give to the hill here, saying that Asterion the river had three daughters, Euboea, Prosymna, and Acraea, and that they were nurses of Hera. [] The hill opposite the Heraeum they name after Acraea, the environs of the sanctuary they name after Euboea, and the land beneath the Heraeum after Prosymna. Pausanias calls the god's guide Polymnus, unless that form of the name is the mistake of a copyist for Prosymnus, as seems to be suggested by the epithet Prosymna, which was applied to Demeter in the sacred grove at Lerna, where Dionysus also had an image. See Paus. However, Hyginus gives Hypolipnus as the name of the guide to hell.

The settlement has been excavated only in very limited areas because of the archaic and classical sanctuary remains, The majority of the Mycenaean material was recovered from the extensive necropolis in the hills to the north and north-west of the acropolis.
